Many health practitioners advise people to consume plenty of oily fish or take fish oil as a dietary supplement because of the numerous health benefits derived from the Omega-3 fatty acids.
Oftentimes fish oil gets confused with cod liver oil, but there is a distinct difference between the two. Fish oil comes from the tissue of fatty fish such as salmon, trout, mackeral, tuna, herring and sardines. The downside is that today many fatty fish contain higher levels of mercury than what is considered unsafe, especially for pregnant women. Cod liver oil on the other hand is derived solely from the livers of Atlantic cod. While this type of oil does have lower levels of Omega-3 fatty acid, it does contain more Vitamin A & D.
Studies show that the following health benefits can occur by ingesting the appropriate amount of fish oils:
-reduced inflammation throughout body
-improved digestion and gut function
-improved mental health and lowered stress
-improved cardiovascular health and lowered blood pressure
-reduced menstrual pain
-reduced risk of stroke
-reduced risk of Alzeihmers disease
-reduced pain for those who have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis
-reduced symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
