What is a tension headache?
A tension headache is the most common type of headache that causes mild, moderate or intense pain behind the head, neck and even eyes. Some patients describe the feeling as a “tight band” around their forehead. Many people confuse their tension headache for a migraine, which causes throbbing pain on one side of their head. However tension headaches do not have as many of the same symptoms as migraines such as nausea and vomiting.
What causes tension headaches?
The most common cause of tension headaches is muscle contractions in the upper neck. Poor posture, working in front of a computer, driving for long periods, cold temperatures, a sinus infection and stress are just some of the many issues that can cause these muscle contractions.
What can I do to get rid of the pain?
If the pain is mild a hot pack on the back of the neck and shoulders can often quickly eliminate any discomfort. However if the pain is moderate to intense, a combination of an over-the-counter pain reliever, a hot pack and a topical analgesic such as Biofreeze might be more effective. Some gentle neck and shoulder stretches are also advised.
How do I keep tension headaches from coming back?
Getting regular chiropractic adjustments can help improve the mobility of your spine, improve function and improve posture so that your muscles are less likely to have contractions or spasms that contribute to tension headaches.
