“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Years Day.”– Edith Lovejoy Pierce
The beginning of a new year often inspires us to set resolutions and goals for what we would like to accomplish in the coming months ahead. If you’ve been struggling with chronic pain, excess weight, or high stress and lowered immunity, you’ll find lots of practical advice in our monthly newsletters, social media or blog posts that can help you learn how to overcome these issues. If you prefer a one-on-one approach, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation where I can give you options for any personalized care you might need.
Here are some basic guidelines to help you jumpstart your New Years Health Resolutions:
1. Get Chiropractic Care For Any Pains, Aches or Stiffness.
Did you know that patients who get regular chiropractic care often have up to 80% fewer doctor’s visits for neck and back pain, take less pain medication overall, recover faster from injuries, and have increased mobility? Better yet, over 95% of chiropractic patients say they are extremely satisfied with their care when compared to the treatment they receive from their primary care physician. Your Fort Collins Chiropractor has over 30-years experience that includes highly specialized training in auto accident and sports-related injury rehabilitation. Dr. Kleker is also a licensed acupuncturist specializing in chronic and acute pain management. He is in network with most major medical insurance plans and our staff will be more than happy to assist you with any questions or claim filing.
2. Get Up and Start Moving.
Being physically active is a vital component to maintaining our health, controlling our weight and living longer. It’s important to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day and add in strength training 3-4 times per week.
It’s also important to follow a good stretching program to help ensure pain-free movement. Some of our favorite programs are: Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Chronic Pain by Pete Egoscue, Forever Painless : End Chronic Pain and Reclaim Your Life in 30 Minutes a Day by Miranda Esmonde-White and Pain Relief Through Movement by Martha Peterson.
3. Manage Stress.
Everyone knows that having too much stress in our lives can have a negative impact on your mental and physical health, relationships or quality of life. Achieving optimal health and wellness requires that we manage stressors as well as our response to it. This often entails changing our lifestyle, thoughts, and emotions in order to regain control. Aim for at least 10-15 minutes per day to sit quietly in meditation. It can also be helpful to practice deep breathing techniques every time you begin to feel overwhelmed or stressed out.
4. Incorporate More Clean Eating Foods Into Your Diet.
As Hippocrates stated over 2,500 years ago, “Food is Medicine”. In short, what we eat and drink gives our bodies what it needs to function optimally. However, eating the wrong foods can cause us to become overweight, undernourished and at risk for the development of diseases and conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer to mention a few. Some our favorite well-balanced meal plans that are dietician approved and won’t leave you feeling deprived are the Mediterranean Diet, the Clean Eating Diet by Tosca Reno and the 21-Day Fix by Autumn Calabrese. Making wise choices about what we put in our mouths every day is a great commitment to ourselves to keeping our mind and bodies in healthy condition.
5. Make Sleep a Priority
Getting enough sleep each night is essential to proper brain and body function. Period. In addition to boosting our memory and staving off dementia, it can decrease the risk for heart disease, weight gain, diabetes, and depression. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that children aged 6-13 years of age get 9-11 hours of sleep a night; teenagers 8-10 hours; adults 7-9 hours, and older adults 7-8 hours. If you’ve been experiencing insomnia, we offer different options that can help you get the sleep you need.
6. Get a Medical Massage For Pain Relief.

Some of the many benefits of medical massage therapy include pain relief, increased range of motion, faster recovery from auto accidents and other injuries, decreased stress and anxiety and improved mobility.
